How many times have you gone to Wal-Mart or best buy (not a good buy) and did not know what to buy?
I had done it many times; however, not in the computer and networking isle. Prices are too high and nowadays even with Linksys, which is not worth the money anymore, the quality is dissatisfying. Their wrt54g and other variations were rock solid routers, I loved them. Now, since they came out with version 2, I have no idea what they were thinking. The routers look sleek and have no antennas (they are internal), but had bad personal experience with them. I had a friend that had DSL from AT&T, and the router would last week at a time. Well finally, after 5 same routers she gave up and let me get her what I have had home for over a year. My favorite toy is ASUS wl-520GU, the best router under $50 on the market;

this router is great for the money. I usually get them around $50 anytime, but I have seen it for as low as $25 with free shipping. So, what is so special about this router? First of all it is super easy to set-up, meaning I let people try it and they can actually do it themselves. The router has ton more potential than “just providing” distribution of internet to your computers. It has USB port, you ask why? Well, how many of you have one printer at home, your kid or somebody has to print an essay and it can get annoying. You can plug the printer into the USB port, requires further installation, and you have a standalone printer. So basically not only are you getting very high quality wireless router, but also wireless printer server.
I have this router setup with special firmware. Easiest explanation of what firmware is: it’s an operating system of the hardware, in this case the router. I use dd-wrt, it is not easy to set-up, to be honest. Depending on your knowledge, it can be easy. The very good part is that you cannot destroy it by uploading the firmware wrong way or failure of uploading it. I have personally tried it to see what it can with stand. Alright, well so what can you get for around $50 dollars? You can go to local Wal-Mart and can, most likely, get a crappy router. The solution? Get the Asus. So many times I have gone to OfficeMax, office depot, target, best buy, Wal-Mart, and many others with jacked up prices and low quality routers. My all time favorite, the best there is as far as computer store (online only) goes is Newegg, it is “The” Computer Store. Bonus for you who don’t live in Tennessee, California and I think New Jersey is no sales tax.
If you have any questions about the hardware or need advice, I will be more than happy to help you, my email is dave@davepcguy.com

Why does Dave like it? Very easy to set-up, very good quality, and has USB printer port.
The range of the wireless is past great.
Price: Depending on promotions, otherwise steady $50 dollars.
